Not too long ago, I went looking for an alternative to yWriter. I still love the program, but it’s like the creator has forgotten Linux exists. I have yWriter7 working, but it has a couple weird bugs and isn’t as customizable as I would like anymore. So, since I’m probably going to be upgrading my distribution in the near future, I went poking around.

And I found Lore Forge, and I love it (thus far). (Incidentally, I also am a big fan of alternativeto.net. It’s a treasure trove for software.) Even if it’s hard to compose in (which I don’t expect), using it is like building the story bible as I go along. Now if only I could import existing documents, rather than having to copy-paste my older stuff in…

And that brings me to the embarrassing part. When I was copying in the text of Einarr and the Shining Valkyrie, I discovered that I’d made an error. When I was uploading the files to Amazon, apparently some important quality checks got missed. Which means the print version has a page for the table of contents, but no actual table. And there was at least one place where I discovered part of a paragraph had been copied in twice.

On the other hand, this gave me a chance to try exporting from the new program? Which, yes, is better: it exports to docx instead of rtf, AND it recognizes smart quotes, which makes for a lot less tweaking once I have the document compiled in LibreOffice.

I should also note, the creator of Lore Forge has no idea I exist. I just picked up his product a month or two ago, and I’m impressed. It’s also an excuse to play with the clanker making character portraits. Have a gander:

At any rate, I have uploaded the corrected file tonight. Tomorrow, probably, I’ll modify the file for ebook and upload a corrected version there, too, so in the next few days they should all be right.
